The Court-Room

Again and again we recur to the thought that Russian folktales are the basis of our upbringing, the foundation of our moral principles.
As the practical experience of the Law Department shows, a fairy-tale is a good opportunity for the students of the Law Department to make the first steps into mastering their future profession.
On May, 18, 2010 the second year students of the Law Department participated in the moot on the fact of Wolf’s commission of the crimes under Articles 162 part 1, 163 part 2, 167 part 1, 127 part 2 of the Criminal Code of Russian Federation.
The students were preparing to the legal proceeding during two months. Firstly, a new version of the fairy tale «Little Red Riding Hood» was learned in details. Then the roles (judges, prosecutors, lawyers, defendant, witnesses, experts, victims) were handed out.
So, the roles are handed out, the indictment is produced, the evidences are borrowed and at 10 o’clock we hear very familiar words:
— All rise! The judge enters the courtroom!
The composition of the court was announced; the witnesses were made to go out, Wolf started to testify upon a trial.
The court-room (the IGUMO’ conference-hall) could hardly accommodate all the visitors. The audience increased nonstop. The third-year students of Law Department, having defended their course papers in the morning, didn’t go home and silently filtered into the court-room to watch the unbelievable performance.
Professor Magomedov, Deputy Rector for Academic Projects, Ph.D. (Engineering), Natalya Irishkova, Deputy Dean of the Law Department, Professor Denikin, Head of the Institute Academic Chair of Ethics and Aesthetics, Ludmila Khodykina, Head of the Division of Informational Politics, took such great interest in the moot that did not leave the court-room until the verdict.
The verdict was worth staying! In the consultative room (the secret of which could only be disclosed by Professor M. Volynkina who was acting the part of expert) the atmosphere was very hot. The judges didn’t know how to make their decision right – Wolf is not guilty! The materials of the case, the testimony of the witnesses, the experts proved that Wolf had to be discharged. The situation in the hall was also most intriguing. And what verdict would the Court arrive at?
It’s pleasant to say that the verdict was the only appropriate one. The Court brought in a favourable decision being guided only by its own sense of justice. Wolf was discharged and set free in the court-room.
