In IGUMO research is conducted in seven priority sectors in whose framework research is planned. Theses are defended and results of research are published.

1. Civil Law and Innovations include two main lines of research:

• Innovative entrepreneurship  (Director of IGUMO assistant professor M.Volynkina Ph.D (law), Deputy Director for Research, Professor Y.Antonyan Ph.D (law), Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management Professor Raitsky Ph.D (economics).

The topicality of the said issue results from the economic changes taking place in Russia. These changes are based among other things on the emergence of an innovative model of economic development which necessitates creating a mechanism of legal regulation of the relationships evolved in the process of innovation activity.

In the research process a conception of legal regulation of the relationships in the sphere of innovative activity is being worked out, and proposals for improving the current legislation are being formulated.

This research is important because its results will allow working out systemic legislative acts based on theory in the sphere of innovative activity. Research is useful in training students as well because the transition of Russia to an innovative model of economic development calls for training students in the field of legal regulation of innovative activity.

In 2007 in this field M.Volynkina defended the doctoral thesis «The Civil Law Form of Innovative Activity» and published two monographs: «Legislation Regulating Innovations in Russia“ (2005) and Legal Regulation of Innovative Activity» (2007) as well as eleven articles in editions recommended by the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles.

2. The Legal Problems of the Protection and Use of Intellectual Property  (the Head of the Business Law Department, assistant Professor A.Pavlov Ph.D (law). The said research line includes the analysis of the legal aspects of contractual and non-contractual use of industrial property, the protection of research and development results, the problems of protecting the right holders’ interests and rights to the results of their work.

A.Pavlov has contributed an article on this subject to be published in a journal recommended by the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles. He is also working at the thesis «The Legal Protection of Research and Development Results: Civil Law Aspects».

• The criminal law and criminological problems of fighting crime encompass four main sectors:

• Prevention of terrorism and extremism  (Deputy Director of IGUMO for Research Professor Y.Antonyan, Ph.D. (law), the Dean of the Law Faculty M.Davitadze Ph.D (law), the Dean of the Psychology Faculty Assistant Professor Y.Yurasova, Ph.D (psychology).

This sector analyses the criminal law aspects as well as the criminological and psychological aspects of terrorism and extremism, the causes of these phenomena and the problems of combating and preventing crime. The results of the research were published in three monographs including «Ethno-religious Conflicts: Problems and Solutions» and «Ethno-religious Terrorism» (2006) as well as in two articles printed in journals recommended by the State Commission Academic Degrees and Titles. At present two monographs are being prepared for publication: «The Nature of Ethno-religious Terrorism» (the IGUMO Publishers) and «Terrorism in Contemporary World» (Publishing house «Nauka»).

Crimes against peace and mankind’s security  (the Dean of the Law Faculty M.Davitadze, Ph.D (law).

This sector of research analyses the concept of a crime and various Kinds of crimes, as well as the objective and subjective features of concrete components of crimes against peace and the security of mankind. The monograph «Crimes against Peace and the Security of Mankind» was published in 2006. At present the 5th year student of IGUMO V.Avanesyan is working on the thesis «Criminal Law and Criminological Problems of Genocide».

• Violent crime  (the Deputy Director of IGUMO Professor Y.Antonyan, Ph.D (law), the Head of the Criminal Law Subjects Department Professor E.Pobegailo and Assistant Professor of the Criminal Law Subjects Department M.Mogachev.

The said sector of research analyses:

• the criminal law and criminological peculiarities of qiolent crime, its statistics and trends in present-day Russia. Measures aimed at the control and prevention of violent crimes are being worked out on the basis of the analysis of their causes.

The employee of IGUMO A.Pobegailo defended a thesis dealing with the said problems in 2007. Fourteen monographs have been published, including «Rape: Causes and Prevention» published in 1990, «Violence among Convicts published in 1994, „Cruelty in Our Life“ published in 1995, „Family Violence“ published in 2000, “ Violence. Man. Society» published in 2001, «Violent Crime in Russia» published in 2002, «The compulsive Criminal Phenomenon» published in 2007, etc.

• Repeated commission of offences  (Deputy Director of IGUMO for Research Professor Y.Antonyan, Ph.D (law), Dean of Law Faculty M.Davitadze, Ph.D (law), assistant Professor of the Criminal Law Subjects Department M.Mogachev).

This sector of research analyses the criminal law and crimilogical peculiarities of the said kind of crimes as well as the psychology of repeat offenders and works out proposals and recommendations to prevent repeated commission of offences.

At present monographs and several articles are being prepared for publication on the basis of empirical data collected, i.e. the survey of 350 repeat offenders.

3. The research into the psychological problems of the personality and behaviour includes two main lines:
— problems of achetype psychology (Deputy Director of IGUMO for Research, Professor Y.Antonyan Ph.D. (law). Two monographs including «The Great „Mother: the Reality of the Archetype“ and three articles dealing with these problems have been published; at present the monograph „The Archetype and the Shadow“ is being prepared for publication;
— the psychology of professional development (the Head of the Clinical Psychology Department A.Glushko, the Dean of the Psychology Faculty Assistant Professor Y. Yurasova, Ph. D. (psychology);

Within the framework of this line of research A. Glushko defended the doctoral thesis „The Psychological and Ergonomic Fundamentals and Means of the Professional Development of Medical Students“ in 2006; the monograph «The Formation of the Professional Proficiency and Psychological Fitness of Cadets in Military Educational Establishments in the Russian Federation and 38 articles have been published as well (10 of the latter have been published in periodicals recommended by the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles).

4. Research into the problem of creating conditions conducive to the innovative activity of entities in the market. Here belong:

• the main trends of the development of the consumer market of goods and services (the Dean of the Economics and Management Faculty Professor K.Raitsky, Ph.D. (economics), the Head of the Finance and Credit Department V.Litovchenko, the Head of the Management Department Professor B.Zeldovich, Ph.D. (economics).

As a result of research in the said line 2 monographs have been published:

Financial Accounting and Production Costs Analyses» and «The Company „Financial Condition Analysis and its Use for Management Decisions“ as well as 4 articles printed in journals recommended by the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles.

• mathematical and instrumental methods of economics (Deputy director for research Professor K.Magomedov, Doctor of Engineering, a professor of the Mathematics and Natural sciences Department V.Bykov Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences; the Dean of the Department of IT in Business, V.Solovyov, Ph.D. (economics); the Head of the Theoretical Informatics and Information Technologies Department B.Skorodumov, Doctor of Engineering.

First and formost his research involves the modeling of the risks of management instruments for the financial, technological and innovation risks management. K.Magomedov has written and defended the doctoral thesis „Mathematical Modelling and Analysis of Electric and Thermal Processes in Engineering Complexes“. Six monographs have been published, including «Power Systems Management: Part 3. Models of Heat Conductivity (2006), „The Mathematical Modelling of Innovation Risks Management Instruments in a Market Infrastructure“ (2007) and 28 articles have been printed in periodicals recommended by the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles; 2 patents have been issued.

Within the said line the Dean of the Faculty of IT in Business V.Solovyov is preparing the doctoral thesis on economics „The Mathematical Modelling of Innovation Projects Liquidity“.

5. Problems of forensic psychology and psychiatry (Deputy Director of the Institute for Research Y. Antonyan, Ph. D. (law).

Within the framework of this line of research practical proposals and recommendations to law enforcement bodies have been worked out.

Eleven monographs have been published including „The Psychology of a Criminal and Crime Investigation“, (1996), „The Psychology of Murder“ (1997), „The Psychology of the Crime and the Penalty“ (2002), and 15 articles have been printed. Two doctoral theses on psychiatry have been defended on the above mentioned problems.

6. The problems of philosophy, religion and study of religious (Deputy Director for Research, Professor Y.Antonyan, Ph. D. (law).

In the course of the research further steps in the understanding of religion, its content, purposes and functions have been made. Three monographs including „Man and God Creating Each Other“ (2003) and „The study of Apocalypse“ (2005) as well as 5 articles have been published on these problems.

7. The Dominant Characteristics of Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP)

Research into this subject is topical because in the process of the rapid development of international relations and integration LSP provide informational exchange in specific fields of knowledge. LSP is a system of linguistic means of the national language which represents the structures of knowledge that evolved during a given period of science development and is used for their objectivisation. The relevance of LSP depends on the level of the development of the appropriate field of knowledge.

The international Conference “ Professional Communication: Verbal and Cognitive Aspects» was held within the framework of the said subject (13 representatives of IGUMO made their reports at it).

Within the framework of the above-mentioned subjects four lines of research are being pursued:

• Utterance Emergence in Professional Communication (The Dean of IT in Business Faculty V.Solovyov, Ph. D. (economics), associate professor of the Foreign Languages Department Y.Sokolova). On the said subject Y.Sokolova has prepared the thesis «Specific Images of Language Consciousness in Professional Communication» (the defence is planned for 2008).

• Languages for Specific Purposes (the Institute’s Deputy Director for International Relations Professor G.Gumovskaya, Ph.D. (philology), Assistant Professor of English Philology Department M.Minova, Ph.D. (philology), Assistant Professor of the English Philology Department Y.Styrina, the Head of the English Philology Department, Assistant Professor B.Zjanturina, Ph.D. (philology), and the Deputy Dean A.Shirokikh, Ph.D. (philology).

On the said subject the coursebook «English in the Legal Profession» by A.Shirokikh was published in 2006, the monograph «LSP in Professional Communication» by G.Gumovskaya was published in 2007. Five articles have been published as well. The authors of the above-mentioned works have taken part in 3 international conferences in Warsaw, Moscow and St.Petersburg, presented 2 reports and published 22 articles. In 2007 A. Shirokikh defended the thesis «Indirect Utterance in the Publicistic Style». In 2007 4 specialist graduation papers were defended in the Institute, two of which were acknowledged as the best in IGUMO. Four more graduation papers are to be defended in the Institute in 2008.

• Terminology and Machine Translation (Professor of the Department of philology Y.Marchuk, Ph.D. (philology)). In 2007 within this research sector the monograph «Computer Linguistics», 10 articles and materials for reports presented at three international conference were published.

• A Foreign Language Teacher’s Professional Culture (The Head of the Pedagogy and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages Department E.Markova, Ph.D. (education) and Assistant Professor O.Bganko, Ph.D. (education)).
Within the framework of the said subject the following lines of research are being pursued:

• the professional competence of a foreign language teacher (the article «The Communicative Culture of a Future Teacher» has been publiched).

• the integration of information communicative technologies in teaching foreign languages ( «Wikipedia, its Purpose and Methodical Functions in Teaching Foreign Languages to Non-Linguistic Students» and «Electronic Presentations, their Role and Place in the Formation of Students’ Communicative Competence»).

• At the junction of these two lines the interuniversity workshop conference «The Innovative Methods and Techniques in Teaching Foreign languages» dedicated to training would be teachers for professional careers on the top of that, theses are being preparated for defence was theses are being prepared for defence.
